General Chiropractic

What does a chiropractor do?

Chiropractors provide alternative health care for those with pain stemming from muscles, joints, or bones. As a chiropractor, Dr. Rugg diagnoses and treats neuromuscular disorders. He works on proper musculoskeletal alignment to relieve that pain.

He and the staff also educate their patients on how to improve functionality in their daily lives with postural assessments, ergonomic training, exercise guidance and other support.

What can I expect at my first appointment?

Dr. Rugg starts by asking you a series of questions to learn more about you and your condition. He will ask about your medical history and the lifestyle factors that may be contributing to your condition. He will also ask questions about your pain and goals for treatment.

After talking to you, you’ll undergo a full evaluation to determine your specific course of treatment. Dr. Rugg assesses your muscle function, reflexes, and range of motion. If necessary, he may order X-rays or do further testing.

After a full exam, he makes a diagnosis and determines whether or not you would benefit from chiropractic care. Then, he will create a treatment plan for you and give you an idea of how long it will take.

Depending on your condition, Dr. Rugg may begin treatment at your first appointment. Possible treatments include:

  • Spine manipulation or joint adjustments to help improve mobility and lessen pain
  • Exercises to improve flexibility, coordination, and strength
  • Electrical stimulation to encourage healing
  • Heat/cold therapy to improve blood flow or reduce swelling
  • Postural and ergonomic assessments to make proper adjustments
  • Nutritional counseling for overall health

The goals of chiropractic care are pain relief, proper function, injury prevention, and recovery.

Why would I see a chiropractor (instead of another doctor)?

People often think of back pain when they hear the word “chiropractor”, and with good reason. Up to 35% of chiropractic patients book their appointments for back pain. However, you might also make an appointment at Soma Health Care Center to relieve headaches or neck, arm, or leg pain. Chiropractors are trained to handle musculoskeletal conditions in all areas of the body.

If you suspect you have a structural imbalance versus an internal problem, Soma Health Care Center is a great place to start the healing process. Chiropractic care may even get rid of your pain without medication or surgery.

Dr. Rugg can diagnose and treat musculoskeletal conditions. If he’s unable to treat your particular condition, he can refer you to another healthcare provider. Contact Soma Health Care Center today for a consultation to see if you’re a good candidate for chiropractic care.
